This work is so exciting to me!! Working on the north shore of Lake Superior in and around Beaver Bay Minnesota, Amy and I spend hours hauling and sorting rocks from the immediate surroundings. From the beach we pull out a small gradient-focused color pallate that will deliver enough contrast to create an image. Most of the images on Black Beach for Ripple Effect One were taken with a cruddy drone driven by a horribly new pilot (me) on a windy day. (it's not a state park so I think it was ok? did I mention my loath for the drone buzzing through my nature experience!? thus we were quick about our captures) One could ask, as I have asked myself- who are these works for?!? And I don't really have an answer. The experience of making them was beyond brilliant. The body is maxed out by the weight of the many. Your mind invents new ways to move, avoiding repetition and reminding you you have a non-dominant side of your body patiently standing by. Muscles flex and tear and rebuild overnight so you get intricately familiar with the shape of your own and the micro muscles that sit dormant during average modern life. This is just one way the rocks shape you.. Visually the world becomes more intricately stunning, patterns emerge. And it's a good opportunity to clean up the beach. Amy Joan Udvig, my collaborative partner for this project, is one of my AWESOME sisters. She has assisted and supported me throughout my career.
